Arran Jamieson: A new country. A new challenge. Another opportunity made possible through Oval15.
Scottish front-rower Arran Jamieson has taken the next step in his rugby career, moving from Scotland to Ireland to join Old Crescent RFC in Limerick.
Competing in Ireland’s All-Ireland League (AIL) Division 2BS, Arran is embracing the opportunity to challenge himself in a new environment and continue developing as a player.
From representing Scotland’s U19 Rugby League side as vice-captain to taking on a new challenge in Irish rugby, Arran’s journey is a great example of how the right opportunities can open doors to new experiences both on and off the field.
From Scotland to Ireland
Before making the move to Ireland, Arran was already building an impressive sporting background in Scotland.
A dual-code athlete, he featured for Scotland’s U19 Rugby League side as vice-captain while also playing for West of Scotland in Scotland’s National League 3.
Looking to develop his game further and experience rugby abroad, Arran decided it was time to explore opportunities outside Scotland.
After joining Oval15.com, he began connecting with clubs looking for players. Interest came from Australia, followed by an opportunity with Old Crescent RFC in Ireland.
Ultimately, Arran chose to make the move to Limerick, taking on a new challenge in the All-Ireland League.
Settling into Life in Ireland
Moving abroad to pursue rugby is about more than what happens on the pitch. Leaving family, friends and familiar surroundings behind can be a significant adjustment, particularly when starting life in a new country.
For Arran, the transition from Scotland to Ireland was a big step, but he has settled in well and is enjoying the experience.
“Moving over from Scotland was a big step, especially being away from my family and everything I’ve known. But I’ve settled in well and I’m really enjoying the experience.”
Meeting new people through the club and work has helped him build connections and feel more at home in Limerick.
His experience highlights the importance of finding the right club environment when making the move overseas. Having people around you who make you feel welcome can make all the difference when adapting to a new country.
Embracing the Challenge at Old Crescent RFC
Arran has been impressed by his experience at Old Crescent RFC so far, particularly the welcome he has received from the players and coaching staff.
“The experience at Old Crescent has been really good so far. Everyone has made me feel welcome, from the players to the coaches, and I settled in quicker than I expected.”
Alongside the welcoming environment, the standard and intensity of rugby have provided a valuable challenge.
“The standard and intensity have been a great challenge, and I feel like I’m learning every week.”
For a player looking to develop his game, competing in a new league provides an opportunity to adapt to different styles of play, learn from those around him and continue improving.
The Difference Between Scottish and Irish Rugby
One of the biggest adjustments Arran has noticed since moving to Ireland is the intensity and physicality of the game.
“I’d say the biggest difference is the intensity and physicality. The rugby is played at a really high tempo, with a big emphasis on being physical and staying switched on.”
Adapting to these demands is an important part of his development. The challenge has pushed him to raise his standards and continue learning as he adjusts to his new rugby environment.
“It’s been an adjustment, but it’s exactly the challenge I wanted.”
With the opportunity to test himself in the All-Ireland League, Arran is embracing the demands of Irish rugby and making the most of the experience.
How Oval15 Helped Make the Move Possible
Finding the right opportunity overseas involves more than identifying a club. Players also need support with introductions, communication and the practical steps involved in making an international move.
Arran credits Oval15 with playing a major role in securing his opportunity at Old Crescent RFC and supporting him throughout the process.
“Oval15 played a massive part in getting me this opportunity. They helped put me in contact with Old Crescent and supported me throughout the process of making the move to Ireland.”
Having the right connections helped Arran explore different options before finding a club that suited his ambitions.
His experience reflects Oval15’s goal of connecting players with clubs internationally and helping them take the next step in their rugby careers.
Looking Ahead
Arran Jamieson’s move to Old Crescent RFC marks an exciting new chapter in his rugby journey. Having settled into life in Limerick and embraced the challenges of Irish rugby, he is continuing to develop his game in a new environment.
His journey demonstrates that opportunities abroad can offer much more than rugby alone. They can provide valuable life experiences, new friendships and the chance to grow both personally and professionally.
