Oval15 is delighted to announce the placement of Sam Lyon at Meraloma RFC in Canada!
Sam joins the Canadian club ahead of the 2025/26 season, and has arrived in Canada.
Lyon is a seasoned New Zealand rugby player with extensive experience. He is powerful with ball in hand, dominant in defence and at the breakdown, and an effective lineout jumper with excellent hands and a versatile skill-set. A physical, athletic, and fit player, he thrives on performing the tough tasks to support his team.
The New Zealander began playing club rugby at a young age, later captaining his high school 1st XV. At Massey University, he earned the U21 MVP award and became a pivotal openside flanker for the championship-winning Varsity A side in the Manawatu competition. His standout performances led to his selection for the Manawatu Academy, preparing for the Super Rugby age-grade competition and New Zealand U20s. Through academy games, he gained exposure to selectors and secured a spot with the Hurricanes U20s.
Additionally, he represented the Manawatu U19s for two years, primarily playing blindside flanker, No 8 and openside flanker, while also leveraging his size, strength, and throwing ability as a hooker for one season. In 2024, he was awarded a Massey University high-performance sports scholarship.
